About Catholic Polytechnic Institute

Catholic Polytechnic Institute (CPI) is a graduate research institute dedicated to advancing the scientific study of persons, intelligence, and human flourishing in an age increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence, digital medicine, and computational technologies.

The Institute was founded on a simple observation: many of the most important questions facing society today lie at the intersection of technology and human nature. Advances in artificial intelligence, neuroscience, psychiatry, healthcare, and information systems are transforming how decisions are made, how knowledge is represented, and how human beings interact with increasingly intelligent technologies. At the same time, fundamental questions concerning consciousness, intelligence, agency, meaning, dignity, and human flourishing remain unresolved.

CPI seeks to address these questions through rigorous interdisciplinary research integrating neuroscience, psychiatry, biomedical informatics, computer science, artificial intelligence, philosophy, and the study of human flourishing.

The CPI Approach

The Institute approaches questions concerning consciousness, personhood, intelligence, and moral agency as open scientific and philosophical problems. CPI does not presume answers to these questions. Instead, it seeks to create a research environment where competing perspectives can be investigated through empirical research, conceptual analysis, and technological innovation.

Rooted in the Catholic intellectual tradition while fully engaged with contemporary science and technology, CPI welcomes collaboration across disciplinary, philosophical, and religious boundaries.

The goal is not simply to understand technology, but to better understand the persons and societies that technology serves.

Human Representation as a Scientific Problem

Modern scientific, clinical, and technological systems rely on representations of human beings.

Healthcare systems represent patients through medical records. Psychiatric frameworks represent suffering through diagnostic categories. Artificial intelligence systems represent persons through data, models, and computational abstractions. Educational, economic, and political systems similarly rely upon simplified representations of human life.

Yet experience, agency, meaning, identity, relationships, values, and dignity often resist simple reduction to existing representations.

CPI investigates how persons, minds, and intelligent systems can be understood and represented in ways that support scientific understanding, clinical care, technological innovation, and human flourishing.
